New BC Place Stadium opening Friday September 30, 2011 Vancouver, BC Canada

New BC Place Stadium, Vancouver, BC Canada

Home to the BC Lions Football Team

New BC Place

Beautiful BC

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond is excited for the big opening tomorrow:

WE’RE GOING OPEN-AIR.
(BUT HOLD THE RAIN.)

Revealing over 7500 square metres of clear blue sky, the new retractable roof will turn BC Place into a year-round, open-air facility and a new architectural signature for our province.

This cable-supported roof is the biggest of its kind in the world, and lets us tailor the atmosphere for any event — from summer festivals in the sun, to football games under the stars, to indoor exhibitions comfortably protected from the rain. The transformation takes just 20 minutes.

For a closer look at the roof, download the BC Place Google Earth model.

Roof Facts

  • The blue-sky opening is 100 metres by 85 metres — the same size as the field below.
  • The fabric roof section retracts into the centre of the opening, where it’s hidden inside of a pod above the videoboard.
  • Each of the support masts is 47 metres tall. All together, the structure is like 18 suspension bridges, each around 200 metres long.
  • The new roof is much more energy efficient than the original roof, saving 25 percent on energy costs (or about $350,000 per year).

Richmond Hosts the Holland Heineken House

In 30 days time, just a few minutes drive from our hotel, the Holland Heineken House will welcome visitors from around the world. The House, sponsored and facilitated by Heineken, will take over two hockey rinks in Richmond’s Minoru Arena, creating a 5,000 square metre space. The Arena is only a 5-minute walk from the Richmond-Brighouse Canada Line Station and a short walk from the Richmond Olympic Oval, where Dutch and Canadian speed skaters will compete during the Games.

The Holland Heineken House, hosted by the NOC*NSF (Dutch Olympic Committee), has been the traditional ‘home away from home’ for the Dutch sporting world.  Now for their 10th Olympics the House will be open to all Dutch athletes, their families, friends and supporters, sponsors, VIP’s and media representatives during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

A wide range of refreshments will be available, from fast food and healthy snacks to the best of modern cuisine with a Dutch and Canadian flare. Food is combined – of course – with a fresh and cold Heineken draught beer. Table reservations for lunch and dinner at the Lodge Restaurant can now be made by clicking here. hhh@atp.nl.

Holland Heineken House will be a prime attraction during the Games, with a wide variety of entertainment and hospitality activities going on nightly. The venue is expected to attract 6,000 daily visitors and has been consistently noted as the place to be by international media covering the Games.

Open daily from 9am until 2 am, the Holland Heineken House is an ideal place to catch up on the latest Olympic news or to simply relax with a cold beverage and a bite to eat. Everyone is welcome!

*Olympic Tip – people visiting the Holland Heineken House are encouraged to wear orange.*

Guests can consult with our front desk for information on arranging transportation to and from the venue.

Richmond Celebrates Rick Hansen

As the torch relay makes it way around the Province, we were excited to hear that Rick Hansen will carry the Olympic torch during its final Richmond leg into the O Zone at Minoru Park on Tuesday, February 9, lighting the community cauldron.

Hansen made the exciting announcement during a Richmond Chamber of Commerce luncheon today, where he was awarded the honour of torch bearer. Given Richmond is Hansen’s home town and where he and his family currently reside, we couldn’t be more excited for him!

Over the past 20 years, Hansen has raised over $200 million for the Rick Hansen Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injury and making communities fully accessible and inclusive.

Hansen is also a Paralympian, having brought home 6 medals, making him a fitting carrier of the torch and a fantastic representative for the Paralympian and paraplegic communities.  March 21, the final day of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympic Games, marks the 25th anniversary of Hansen’s Man in Motion tour, which saw Hansen travel over 30 countries by wheel chair to raise funds for spinal cord research.

Richmond City Hall is expected to make another major announcement on Friday with the Canadian Olympic Committee in attendance. The Committee will reveal Canada’s flag bearer for the XXI Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Stay tuned…

Free Family Events – 2010 Edition

The Olympic Games bring with them not only a sense of sportsmanship and international unity, but also a feeling of celebration and festivity. Let’s face it, Vancouverites like to have a good time! Which is why we’ve put together a list of our favorite (free) family events scheduled during the Games to get you and yours in the Olympic spirit.

LiveCity Vancouver (David Lam Park and Georgia/Cambie Street)

Just a few minutes from Stadium/Chinatown Skytrain, LiveCity Yaletown will host Olympic sport and cultural programming, a water-side stage and a nightly closing show suitable for the entire family. LiveCity Yaletown will host thousands of people daily and will be open throughout the Games, along with a pre-Games kick-off event in early February. Hours of operation for the site are 11 am to 11 pm, seven days a week.

Skate at GE Plaza (Robson Square)

Take a whirl on the newly restored and already highly popular ice rink daily from noon to 9 pm (weather permitting). No skates? Rent a pair for just $3 (and helmets are free for those under 12) or bring your own. Robson Square will feature live entertainment, sport demonstrations, light shows, video displays, and fun for the whole family.

Public art illuminates the night sky downtown Vancouver

Starting at dusk on February 4, 20 robotic searchlights will create a quiet canopy of light in the night sky above and on the sparkling surface of English Bay below, with designs created by people around the world and delivered via the Internet. This project, called Vectorial Elevation, will be the first time the internationally celebrated work of art will be displayed in Canada and over a body of water.

Tour the Lantern Forest at LunarFest (Granville Street)

Enjoy a nice walk on Granville Street between Robson and West Georgia between January 22 and February 28, full of lanterns made by local children and public art sculptures. On February13 and 14, the whole family can enjoy a parade by Public Dreams and make their own lanterns, too. The festival is just one of many activities expected to take place on the designated pedestrian corridors along Granville, Robson, Beatty and Hamilton/Mainland during the Games.

All of the above events are easily accessible from our hotel by simply hopping on the Canada Line Skytrain. This also gives you a glimpse into the fantastic cities of Richmond and Vancouver along the way. Let our front desk assist you with planning and schedules.

The Canucks Catch Olympic Spirit

With only 9 days to go until Vancouver welcomes the world at the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, some of our hometown heros are gearing up to represent their respective countries and bring home some medals. Namely, our very our Vancouver Canucks.

Although the boys are still playing in regular season – in-fact the Canucks take on the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night – we can imagine they must be anxious to spend some time with their national teams. Goalie Roberto Luongo, the only Canuck to land on the roster for Team Canada, has some serious home ice advantage. Yet, Lu isn’t the only Canuck looking to take home Olympic glory in the coming weeks.

Team Sweden’s front lines will swell with Canuck talent, and leading the pack is Henrik and Daniel Sedin. Right winger Mikael Samuelsson has also joined his fellow Swedes as has defenseman Alexander Edler. Ryan Kesler will represent long-time Canadian rival Team USA, while Sammi Salo will represent Finland. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff will join Team Germany and Pavol Demitra will be skating with Slovakia.

Who do you think will take home the gold? What we wouldn’t give to get our hands on some tickets to the mens gold medal match – that’s going to be a game to remember. Whether you have the hottest ticket in town, or plan to pile into a pub with friends to watch the games unfold remember to wear red and holler as loud as you can…

Cranberry Olympic Rings?

It appears the rumors are true. Visitors to Richmond and locals alike can expect to see a formation of cranberries in the shape of the iconic Olympic rings float down the Fraser  River. Not only does this celebrate the Olympic Games, but also one of BC’s biggest agricultural exports.

The berries will float in a form carrying the design of the Canadian Olympic Committee’s logo, including a giant maple leaf and set of Olympic rings, in the river offshore from the Richmond Olympic Oval. City officials will kick it up a notch by filling the water feature outside Richmond City Hall with cranberries to give the public an up-close look at the island city’s No. 1 agricultural industry.

It’s part of a new program called Richmond Revealed, a series of public displays showcasing Richmond industries to the world during the Games. The program will also include a seven-story inukshuk to be built out of shipping containers, a room-sized model of the Canadarm, Canada’s contribution to the International Space Station designed by Richmond-based MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates, along with other aerospace projects.

Here are the facts:

  • Olympic cranberry display
  • 13 million cranberries weighing 13,600 kilograms (30,000 pounds) will form the logo of the Canadian Olympic Committee in the Middle Arm
  • It will cover 3,210 square metres (34,550 square feet)
  • Over 30 anchors will hold the display in place
  • All berries will come from Richmond farms
  • Richmond is Canada’s largest producer of cranberries with more than 60 family-owned farms, the majority of which are part of the Ocean Spray co-operative
  • Cranberries will be composted at the end of the installation

Go Green During the Games

Organizers of the Holland Heineken House in Richmond are expecting to serve approximately 320,000 cups of beer at what is expected to be one of the liveliest party centres during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Aside from putting on a good party, the Dutch folks have extended their strong sense of sustainability to anyone visiting over the new few weeks.

400 bikes have been brought in by the Dutch Olympic Committee for visitors to use and enjoy while visiting Heineken House. The bikes have already been in use, as many of the people working behind the scenes at Minoru Arena have been using the bikes to get around town. Visitors can expect to experience some Dutch culture first hand by borrowing one of bicycles – for free – to explore Richmond.

In a pledge to keep our Games as green as possible, check out the helpful hints listed below.

Keeping Our Games Green:

• Choose an alternate mode of transportation to get around, whether you’re attending Games events or moving about the region. There are plenty of options, including expanded public transit, pedestrian and cycling routes and rideshare or carpool programs.

• Practice the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) using the bins provided at all Games venues.

• Take only what you need. In order to reduce your need for paper guides as much as possible, Vancouver2010.com will feature all the information you need to enjoy the 2010 Winter Games experience.

• Use travel mugs (reusable mugs) instead of disposable cups wherever possible.

• Respect venue communities and their residents: pay attention to parking and traffic restrictions, dispose of recyclables and garbage appropriately, and enjoy the diversity of both the people and environment that the host region offers.

Let Loose on the Links

While the Winter Games are top of mind for most, the festivities, parties and social gatherings may have you running on empty. Our team has certainly been partaking in many of the events and soaking in the Olympic spirit. However, if you’re seeking a bit of refuge and looking to sneak away from the hustle and bustle, we may have the remedy for you!

Richmond is known for it’s great golf culture, with a variety of courses to choose from. Fancy a round at twilight followed by a beer at the bar while watching an event? Perhaps you’d like to hit the links early and finish off your day in the clubhouse watching Team Canada kill the competition in hockey? Either way, the team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond can help you secure your tee times and offer information on the surrounding courses. Here’s a few recommendations close by:

Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club

Located minutes from the hotel, this 18-hole, 6,641-yard course is simply breathtaking. The towering Coast Mountains to the north, the Pacific Ocean breezes from the west and shimmering stretches of water add both beauty and excitement to your game. Designed by Les Furber, Mayfair Lakes is known for fast, well-protected greens, lush fairways and distinctive water. Its inspired layout offers a unique challenge on every hole. Click here for more information.

Green Acres Golf Course

Now owned and operated by Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, one of the most prestigious private golf clubs in Canada. Shaughnessy lends its expertise in providing guests with a first class golfing experience, continuing on with the reputation for quality and excellence that Greenacres has established since 1964. Nordic Nosh

The Olympic Games have brought about awareness and interest into the many different cultures visiting our city, this is true. However, we’re learning alot about the varying cultures, customs and cuisines of our fellow Canadians with the many provincial pavilions open throughout the Games. Here’s two of our faves:

Atlantic House

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador along with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency present Atlantic Canada House, showcasing some of Atlantic Canada’s best.

The moment you arrive, you’ll enjoy an authentic and inspiring setting. Treat yourself to East Coast culinary delights, discover the region’s culture and spirit, and share in Atlantic Canadian hospitality.

Within the pavilion space, you’ll find the Granville Island Stage, the Revue Stage and the Backstage Lounge. Atlantic Canadian artists will be featured nightly, and daily performances on the Revue Stage will celebrate the region and welcome guests to the Atlantic Canadian way of life.

Click here for a schedule of daily events.

Swiss House

The House of Switzerland is the official Swiss guest centre at the 2010 Olympics and is open to guests for the duration of the Games.

Bridges Restaurant on Granville Island is playing host to Swiss House, as the restaurant has been transformed into a psuedo-challet. Order off of their Swiss menu – we recommend the fondue for 2 – and watch the lights dance over English Bay after dusk. Be sure to make a reservation to avoid disappointment and leave the car at home. You can take Skytrain to Olympic Village station and then transfer onto the Bombardier Streetcar, which will take you directly to Granville Island.

The tradition of a Swiss guest centre dates back to 1998, when the House of Switzerland celebrated its inaugural event at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

Colbert Nation

Prior to the start of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, late night talk show host Stephen Colbert made some rather unruly remarks about Richmond and the rules around allowing the US speed skating team access to the Oval to train for the Olympics. Ofcourse the popular TV personality was making these comments in jest, however he very seriously committed to sponsoring the US speed skating team – himself – and has since been quite involved in the Games ever since.

Last week Colbert filmed two segments for his show The Colbert Report, setting up shop in Creekside Park near downtown Vancouver. This week Colbert aired what he is calling his Vancouverage, which has been fantastic exposure for both Vancouver and the city of Richmond.

The Olympic Oval is one of many recreational facilities in Richmond and will beopen for public use following the Games. In addition to this Olympic legacy, Richmond boasts many activities for the whole family to enjoy while visiting the area.

Just steps away from the Holiday Inn Express Hotel
& Suites Riverport-Richmond
visitors can enjoy the Riverport Sports and Entertainment Complex. Spend the afternoon skating at the Richmond Ice Centre or make a splash at Watermania.  Aforementioned in a previous blog post, visitors can take a ride along the scenic Richmond waterfront by borrowing one of 400 bikes donated by the Dutch Olympic Committee that will remain in Richmond for the community to enjoy.

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond would like to personally thank Mr. Colbert for shining a light on our beautiful community of Richmond and all it has to offer.

Gold Canada Gold!

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond recently hosted a Gold Medal Manager’s Reception and brought the house down cheering the Canadians with pride. 100 happy guests and corporate clients felt at home in the Great Room with dinner, drinks and our BIG TV plus gold medals  – of the Belgian Chocolate variety – for everybody to take home.

In other news, we’d like to share with you this fantastic email that Ted, our Guest Services Manger, received yesterday:

Hi Ted,

My name is Bob Lowe and my wife Susan and I just checked out of your hotel this morning. We travel all over the World staying in various hotels including Holiday Inn products.

We were in Vancouver last week for the Olympics, stayed at another HI Express and made an impulse decision to come back for two days this week for the same thing. Your Express was the only HI chain with availability and even though you looked far away on the map from events we made the booking.

We had one of the best stays at your place. Your staff is phenomenal! What a great team no matter what time of the day or night we asked for info or assistance they all helped out. The shuttle ride to the Skytrain station was a huge help. Getting to the Olympic venues from your hotel was easier then when we stayed at the other Express.

I don’t have individual names because everyone did an excellent job! Our compliments and thanks to your entire staff.

Bob and Susan Lowe

Way to go to our guest services team and way to go Team Canada!

Moving On Up

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond is excited to announce that we’ve been ranked second in Western Canada for Holiday Inn Best Guest Satisfaction. This means we’re ranked #2 out of all Holiday Inns in Western Canada for the best customer satisfaction, which is determined by comments and ratings from prior guest stays. We’re happy to report that our staff officially ROCK, if we do say so ourselves.

In other news, click here to check out our Trip Advisor popularity index. We’re excited to share that we’re currently ranked 3rd out of 26 properties and #5 among business travelers who have stayed in Richmond, BC! Here’s what some of our past guests and clients are saying:

We stayed at this hotel with a group of 15 people. the staff was very attentive to our group, and the rooms were very large, well furnished, and clean. I would definitely stay here again!!

- Guest, California

My clients have just returned from the Olympics and could not say enough great things about the staff and service at the Holiday Inn Express. Even though the Olympics were taking place my clients experienced friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff even transported my clients to several stores to try to buy those popular red mittens!

That was beyond the call of duty. Alex at the front desk was especially helpful to me as I had my clients on the ship that was supposed to be docked in Vancouver. 2 weeks prior to my clients arriving the ship was cancelled and I was left with no accommodations! A nightmare. I immediately called the only hotel that showed availability and Alex was kind enough to hold the room for a couple of hours so that I could confirm it with my client.. WOW that is service.

Ted the manager answered all my questions and concerns. They have an airport shuttle that works really well for clients. Stay here and you won’t be disappointed!

Another day, another kudos on Trip Advisor.

Pub Crawl

Aside from the folklore, the shamrocks, corned beef and cabbage feasts, the reason St. Patrick’s Day has spread to a world-wide cultural phenomenon is simply because it’s a great excuse to celebrate! So in light of this festive holiday, we felt it was only fitting to file through some of our favourite local pubs and share this important insight with our readers. But first, let’s reflect on the reason we wear green and salute our Irish friends today.

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. But for all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling. Click here to read St. Patrick’s Wikipedia page…and yes, he does have one.

Our Favourite Richmond Pubs

And just steps away from our hotel…

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites wishes you and yours the luck ‘o the Irish! Happy St. Pat’s.

Earth Hour

Tomorrow marks the fourth annual Earth Hour, a global event that encourages people around the world to power down for one full hour to demonstrate our commitment to ending global warming.

The global event is organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March each year. The WWF is asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Earth hour was conceived by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney’s lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2010 will take place tomorrow, March 27, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., local time.

Turning off the lights on March 27 is a great start, but we can all make a difference for the environment 365 days a year.

Here are 10 easy ways to help you reduce your carbon footprint:

  • Leave the car at home.
  • Eat local.
  • Fly less.

    Toronto - Earth Hour 2009

  • Be energy efficient.
  • Use Green Power.
  • Get a Home Energy Audit – and act on it!
  • Hang Dry Your Clothes.
  • Work From Home.
  • Unplug Unused Appliances.
  • Tell Your Local Official.

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond encourages you and your communities to get involved and shut off the lights tomorrow for Earth Hour. Click here for more information.

Patio Lanterns

It’s that time of year when restaurateurs dust off their patio furniture and prepare their outside spaces for the summer months ahead. And although we’ve enjoyed an early patio season here in Richmond, BC – thank you El Nino – we thought we’d share some of our favorite patios to linger on as the days get longer.

Richmond and the surrounding neighborhoods boasts quite an eclectic mix of gastro genres, thanks to our multicultural community, so there’s always some place new to explore. Being the food lovers we are, we thought we’d share a few of our favorites that come highly recommended by the team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond:

Tapenade Bistro – Cuisine comparable to what you’d find along the southern shores of France. Begin with the Beet Salad followed by the authentically delicious Bouillabaisse. Locatedin the heart of Steveston Village at 3711 Bayview Street. Call for reservations 604.275.5188.

The Blue Canoe – Enjoy the game on the heated, covered patio with fabulous views of the Fraser, or share a bottle of bubbles at sunset. Check them out at 3866 Bayview Street, 604.275.7811. www.bluecanoerestaurant.com/

Browns Social House – Casual dining at its best. Stop in for a pint on the patio and try an order of the lobster wings. Located at 11660 Steveston Hwy, 604.275.3322. http://brownsrestaurantgroup.com/

Chop – Searching for a succulent steak or the fresh catch of the day? Stop by to peruse the Ocean Wise menu and a fine selection of local wines. Located at 10251 St Edwards Drive, call ahead 604.276.1180. www.chop.ca/

Locally Grown

Among Richmond’s best kept secrets is the many locally owned farms that produce some of the freshest fruit and vegetables this side of the great divide. Eating locally, or adopting the 100 mile diet, have become common practices as we learn more and more about the benefits of eating fresh, local foods.

Most farms have been family businesses for several generations,
cultivating some of Canada’s most well-known experts when it comes to produce. Richmond produces the largest amount of blueberries in theworld, which have become known for their many health benefits and antioxidants. Cranberries are another hot commodity, again rich with health benefits, but also a common fixture on your holiday table.

Visitors to Richmond are pleasantly surprised by this locally grown culture, and have the opportunity to explore the many farms and families that proudly invite you to explore some of Richmond’s natural gems.

Start your day off at London Heritage Farm by enjoying some afternoon tea and freshly baked goodies before taking a stroll around the beautifully manicured grounds, boasting one of the most beautiful gardens in Richmond. Afterwards, stop by Richmond Country Farms to pick up some fresh produce for a picnic dinner or to traipse about their famous pumpkin patch with the kids.

Eat fresh. Eat local.

Hop to It

With the lovely extended long weekend upon us, many of us are stocking up on hot cross buns and all the traditional fixens that usually make up an Easter dinner. Some people prefer ham, others stuff a big turkey, and some people might do both! But our favorite tradition comes in the form of a bunny…a chocolate bunny that is.

Where did the bunny rabbit originate you might ask? The exact origin of the superstition is unknown, though it has appeared in print as early as 1954 in Bromley, England, where it is most commonly said to have originated. Some reports have placed the bunny’s origins as early as the 1800s. Today the Easter bunny has spread to most English-speaking countries around the world, although like all folklore, determining its exact area of distribution is difficult. The superstition is related to the broaderbelief in the rabbit or hare being “lucky”, as exhibited in the practice of carrying a rabbit’s foot for good luck. Some also believe it represents jumping into the future and moving ahead with life and happiness. We’ll go with the latter.

If you’re staying with us this weekend, or find yourself in the Richmond area, be sure to take the kids to Steveston Village for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. On Saturday, April 3 from 1:00-3:00pm arrive with your Easter baskets in hand and hunt for eggs in and around participating businesses. Click here to view the official map.

We hear it’s going to be a hopping good time. Happy long weekend everyone!

Fresh Catch

The historic fishing village of Steveston has become world renowned for producing some of the freshest seafood in North America. Seafood revelers can be seen sitting dockside awaiting the arrival of the many fishing boats each afternoon, for their chance at bartering for some of BC’s finest fish. Or, some prefer to take a more hands on approach and head out on the rough waters to cast their own line.

Richmond-based Lang’s Fishing Adventures pride themselves as being among the top Fraser River salmon and sturgeon fishing guides. With a passion for fishing like you’ve never seen, Lang’s Fishing Adventures offers top class salmon, sturgeon, steelhead and trout fishing on the Mighty Fraser River and its’ tributaries.

During their guided fishing trips they teach guests the proper techniques to catch all the different varieties of fish. Their guides have years of experience fishing on the Fraser River and many other local Vancouver rivers and lakes and are eager and passionate to show you what BC fishing is all about.

Earth Day – particip-action

Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event in the world. More than 6 million Canadians are expected to again join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every student in Canada will take part in an Earth Day activity and we’re going to follow their lead.

Environmental challenges continue to grow as our daily actions pollute and degrade the fragile environment that we all depend on. This is why the Earth Day movement is so important in evoking grassroots change and reducing our carbon footprint.

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond has prepared a list of things you can do to get involved in Earth Day tomorrow:

  • Wash full loads of clothes in cold water and hang to air dry

Heating and cooling

  • For summer air conditioning, set your thermostat to 24°C or 25°C
  • For winter heating, set your thermostat to 19°C or 20°C
  • Install ceiling fans and programmable thermostats

  • Take short showers instead of baths
  • Close water taps while brushing your teeth

Business After 5

As the Vancouver Canucks prepare to take on the Los Angeles Kings tonight in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, we thought it would be fun to share some details of an event our team hosted during Game 1 of the series.

The Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond was pleased to host a Richmond Chamber of Commerce Business After 5 event on April 15. Wine, beer, and sliders were served to guests as ‘Hockey Night in Richmond’ played on our 52” Plasma TV.

Over 70 enthusiastic, energetic attendees from businesses around Richmond and Vancouver (all members of the Chamber of Commerce) had a blast mingling with our team. Our marketing gal Salima and Sales Manager Anna did tours throughout the property and had guests calling after the event to make appointments for future dates to tour our hotel.

Salima also invented and mixed a new cocktail to commemorate the evening. We call it the Henrik:

  • 1 oz vodka
  • Muddled fresh basil
  • Pineapple juice
  • Splash of Fresco
  • Pour over ice

Fourteen door prizes were awarded throughout the night. We’d like to thank our clients, suppliers and local businesses for generously contributing to our event: Sanduz Winery, Marble Slab Creamery, Chewters Chocolates, and Silver City Famous Players.

Cinco de Mayo

It’s hard to believe it’s already the month of May, in particular the 5th of May. What does this mean you ask? It’s Cinco de Mayo!

The holiday of Cinco De Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16.

Seeing as this is such a festive holiday, we think Cinco de Mayo should be widely celebrated here in Canada too! So to kick things off, we’d like to toast our North American cousins to the south of the U.S. and offer up the traditional, authentic recipe for the classic (and gringo favorite) Margarita:

Ingredients

  • Seven parts tequila
  • Four parts Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • Three parts lemon or lime juice
  • Lime wedge or slice for garnish
  • Salt for rim of glass

Instructions

  • Rub the rim of the glass with the lime slice to make the salt stick to it. Shake the other ingredients with ice, then carefully pour into the glass (taking care not to dislodge any salt).
  • Garnish with lime and serve.

Ole!

McHappy Day

General Manager Robert Gillis recently participated in McHappy Day, an annual event sponsored by McDonald’s Restaurants. Rob volunteered his services at a local McDonald’s located at the Ironwood Mall here in Richmond.

As mentioned in a previous post, Rob has been appointed to the role of Chair of the Tourism Richmond Board of Directors and in doing so, lent his support in giving back to the community. From flipping burgers and making fries, to greeting guests and taking orders, Rob really enjoyed working with the McDonald’s team!

Since McHappy Day was first introduced in 1977, the national one-day fundraising event has raisedmore than $28.7 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of Canada, the Ronald McDonald House® program and local children’s charities across Canada.  In addition, McDonald’s donates 10 cents from every Happy Meal sold every day in Canada to RMHC which has to date has more than raised $23 million.

During McHappy Day, more than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants across Canada donated $1.00 from every Big Mac® sandwich, McMuffin® sandwich and Happy Meal® sold to local children’s charities across Canada. In addition, many restaurants held fundraising events leading up to McHappy Day to lend additional support.

Good Vibes at Gudrun

Tucked away between the eclectic shops of Moncton Street in the historic fishing village of Steveston, sits a not-so-well-kept secret that’s been attracting foodies from near and far.

Gudrun Tasting Room offers an alternative to much of the cuisine being served in restaurants today. Choosing only to serve what’s local, in season or unprocessed, Gudrun provides a wholesome, explosively tasty dining experience.

Owner and Steveston native Patrick and his team are a welcoming crew, and the atmosphere is urban and chic. Share a cheese plate featuring Canadian fromage, or go global with something from France. Mix it up and try a charcuterie paired with an Okanagan wine or some bubbles to toast.

Which ever you choose, the good folks at Gudrun will take care of you. They’re open Tuesday to Sunday, 5:30-midnight and are now open for Sunday brunch!

Steveston is only a few minutes away from our hotel. Notify a member of our guest services team to arrange for reservations.

India is experiencing a period of remarkable growth and transformation and its artists (like contemporary artists everywhere) are responding to these changes. With an eye on its past and a view to the future, these artists are examining the social, political, economic and religious implications of becoming a major world economy.

The exhibition will feature installation-based work by six of India’s most recognized contemporary artists: Shilpa Gupta, Reena Kallat, TV Santhosh, Sudarshan Shetty, arist collective Thukral & Tagra, and Hema Upadhyay.

Fit for a Queen

Given summer hasn’t quite arrived yet in Richmond, now would be the time to talk about all of the fabulous amenities nearby that can entertain us while the weather is drizzly. One of our greatest advantages is our central proximity, to basically everything! Downtown Vancouver, YVR, Steveston Village…we’re even a stone’s throw away from the US border.  On top of that, here’s a couple of top spots we highly recommend when the weather man won’t play ball:

Starlight Casino

Starlight, star bright, will you win the jackpot tonight? Stop by Starlight Casino to try your chance on the slots or play a few rounds of poker. Not a gambler? No problem. Enjoy one of the many fine dining options or stop by the Redbar for a cocktail. Click here to view the entertainment and events calendar.

Queensborough Landing

Is this rain giving you a case of the blues? In need of a little retail therapy? Fret not fair shopper, the fabulous outlets of Queensborough Landing are not far from our hotel. With designer stores like Guess, Mexx, Tommy Hilfiger and Aldo, there’s something to suit every fashionistas pallet. There’s also a Home Outfitters and a Best Buy for the boys.

Cuppa Tea

Looking  for something a little different next time you’re visiting Richmond or Vancouver? Interested in learning more about the rich culture of historical Steveston Village (which just happens to be a short drive away from our hotel)? Then an afternoon at London Heritage Farm is an absolute must!

London Heritage Farm is a 4.06 acre historical site that overlooks the south arm of the Fraser River.   The site offers a 1880′s farmhouse in a park-like setting with lovely heritage and herb gardens, the restored Spragg family barn, old farming equipment, a small hand tool museum, chickens, bees, allotments and large lawns as well as picnic tables and public washrooms. It’s like turning back the clock and taking a glimpse into the days of yester year.

Be sure to visit the tea room for a proper English tea service. Peruse the gift shop for some locally hand-made arts and crafts. Or, take a stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.

One Free Room

Who knew that ONE FREE room could create such a buzz? Our Sales and Marketing Manager Anna Smith had an inkling that it would.

One free room has created a 30% increase in business for our hotel. Why? Because travel agents from the Okanagan and Vancouver Island got to find out first hand how great our staff and property is and what a terrific location we boast here in Richmond, BC for business and local leisure travelers alike. This was the objective behind having this group stay with us to see for themselves and be true references, offering authentic reviews for their clients. Given these said clients often request Stay Park & Go, our special guests were given added advantages with our free parking services. For example, corporate travelers who frequent the lower mainland find our location ideal and all the complimentary features and local benefits are simply a bonus.

Come see for yourself and discover what the buzz is all about and learn first hand the comforts, convenience and free services you’ll enjoy while staying at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond. You Always Make Me Smile

In April, Holiday Inn launched a TV campaign featuring a jaunty acoustic love song called “You Always Make Me Smile” by independent Nashville singer/songwriter Kyle Andrews. Holiday Inn has partnered with ad agency McCann Erickson to handle the commercial release of the single, which is available for download on iTunes.

The partnership is referred to as StayU Music, a pseudo label that will market and promote the single. “You Always Make Me Smile” is currently being featured in ads in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, China and other Asian markets. Holiday Inn also plays the song while guests are on hold making reservations, during guest wake-up calls and in the lobbies of Holiday Inn hotels.

Fans are invited to design their own cover art for the digital track. To listen to the song and create your own cover art, click here.

Compassion is key

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a group of high school music students and their teachers from San Mateo, California who were visiting Vancouver as part of an exchange program.

Tragically, one of the students from this group was involved in an accident while visiting one of Vancouver’s popular tourist attractions and passed away.

Our hotel has since been recognized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Congress of the United States House of Representatives for our compassion and sensitivity during this difficult time. Although our team was deeply saddened by the news, we pulled together to ensure our guests were comfortable and their tragic loss acknowledged.

A little compassion and understanding go a long way. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the student.

New Apple Store in Richmond, Microsoft look out

Hundreds lined up Saturday at Richmond Centre mall to be among the first inside B.C.’s newest Apple store.

The lineup of those hungry for iPads and iPhones

iPhone 4 changes everything

stretched outside along the sidewalk of the mall. First in line were Michael Chira and dad Vasile Chira after spending the night outside Richmond Centre to secure their spot.

The Chiras had an eye on the store’s fresh stock of iPhone 4 smart phones.

In keeping with the store’s custom the first 1,000 customers through the doors received a limited-edition Apple T-shirt. It’s B.C.’s third Apple store, and first outside Vancouver.

“We’re really happy to have them here at Richmond Centre,” said mall spokesperson Leslie Matheson.

The new location, one of 17 in Canada and more than 300 worldwide, features the standard Apple repertoire of electronics products like computers, iPods and iPhones. It also boasts a Genius Bar, at which Mac users can set an appointment to get expert advice on their computing issues.

The store opened in a renovated space in Richmond Centre, which is in the process of negotiating with other large retailers. Meanwhile, Sephora will open at the end of October and Forever 21 is expected to open after Christmas.

Tall Ships

Special Events  Tall Ships   June 3 to 7, 2011

Richmond is a Port of Call for the World’s Classic Tall Ships

 Maritime Heritage
A century ago, the biggest and fastest sailing ships from all over the world came to Steveston’s bustling Cannery Row in Richmond to load much desired cargos of Pacific salmon for international markets. Today, Richmond’s Steveston Harbour remains Western Canada’s largest commercial fishing port. It is also home to several significant maritime heritage sites, including two national historic sites, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, and the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Park.

The City of Richmond celebrates its maritime heritage, through a number of special events, including visits by some of the world’s great tall ships, festivals and maritime heritage restoration and preservation projects and programs.

Tall Ships Richmond 2011
TallShip_Colour150Experience the majesty of the sails as the tall ships return to Richmond from June 3 to 7, 2011.

Along a three kilometre riverfront of the historic Steveston Harbour, this four-day land and sea festival will celebrate Richmond’s rich maritime history and multiculturally-diverse community.

Highlights of event include:

  • triumphant parade of sails as the mighty ships arrive
  • ship boarding and viewing
  • waterside tours
  • live music and entertainment
  • artisans and farmers markets
  • fireworks
  • cultural displays and activities
  • youth sail training

Tall Ships Festival 2002
Crowd Gathering at the Tall Ships FestivalIn 2002, the Tall Ships from around the world returned to historic Steveston for Richmond Tall Ships 2002, a five-day celebration of maritime history and culture. An estimated 400,000 people turned out to greet a majestic fleet of Tall Ships from Europe, Asia and the Americas visiting Richmond from August 8 to 12, 2002. The Tall Ships were the centrepiece of a major, maritime-themed festival featuring fun and affordable activities for the entire family.

The City’s success in staging the festival was recognized through a number of awards including the Port of the Year Award from the American Sail Training Association, Tourism BC’s 2003 award for Best Tourism Marketing Campaign and the 2002 Gateway Award from Tourism Richmond.

Kaiwo Maru Visits Richmond in 2004
The tall ships returned to the shores of Richmond again in the summer of 2004 . Japans Kaiwo Maru, translated as the King of the Ocean, one of the world’s largest tall ships at a length of 110.9 metres (361-feet), made a four-day visit to Richmond in July, 2004. The Kaiwa Maru’s visit thrilled enthusiastic crowds who lined up for free public tours and an awe-inspiring demonstration of the crew’s sail rigging skills.

SV Concordia Visits Britannia Shipyard
July and August, 2004 also featured a visit to Richmond by the SV Concordia, a well-loved tall ship, that spends 10 months of the year sailing the seven seas, while offering sail training to high school students. The 57-metre (188-foot) Concordia spent three weeks based at Richmond’s Britannia Heritage Shipyard. Hundreds of youths and other sailing fans were able to take part in hand-on day sails, for a once in a lifetime experience of helping to sail a magnificent tall ship.

 Maritime Festival
The inaugural Richmond Maritime Festival was launched in August, 2004 at Britannia Heritage Shipyards. A tribute to wooden boats and other classic ships, the event featured displays of unique and historic vessels, entertainment maritime-related displays and activities.  The Festival is planned to be an annual celebration of maritime heritage.

 More to Come
Additional visits by Tall Ships and other special maritime events are currently being planned. For more information contact the Britannia Heritage Shipyard at 604-718-8050 or britannia@richmond.ca

Earth Day April 22

Smart Shopping

  • “Buy what you need, not what you want”
  • Consider renting and borrowing things that are seldom needed
  • Buy used items from garage sales and second-hand stores

Simple Savers

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Use aerators on faucets and shower heads
  • Weatherstrip windows and doors

Transportation Alternatives

  • Walk, cycle, car pool and use public transportation
  • When driving, reduce idling and maintain correct tire pressure
  • Consider car sharing programs or renting

Food Choices

  • Choose local and organic foods that are in season, and support local food producers
  • Eat less meat

Washing and Drying

  • Wash full loads of clothes in cold water and hang to air dry

Heating and cooling

  • For summer air conditioning, set your thermostat to 24°C or 25°C
  • For winter heating, set your thermostat to 19°C or 20°C
  • Install ceiling fans and programmable thermostats

Bathroom Basics

  • Take short showers instead of baths
  • Close water taps while brushing your teeth

Careful Cleaning

  • Choose natural, non-toxic cleaning products
  • Make simple, natural cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and water

Don’t Discard

  • Donate, reuse and recycle items before throwing them into the trash
  • Harmful materials like chemicals, batteries, electronics, etc. should be taken to local hazardous waste depots or recyclers

Now from the City of Richmond:

Richmond Earth Day Celebrations Emphasize Sustainable Living

Earth Day approaches its 41st anniversary on April 22. This year, over one billion people around the world are expected to participate, truly embodying the theme, A Billion Acts of Green®. The City of Richmond will be officially celebrating Earth Day on Thursday, April 21 at the Garden City Community Park (corner of Alberta Road and Garden City Road).

“In this day and age, it is important that every individual does their part to ensure the continued health and sustainability of our environment for generations to come,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “On Earth Day, we will be teaching community members, especially our youth, how they can contribute to making our planet a greener place to live.”

The event will commence at 1 p.m. with a number of community groups and neighbourhood schools volunteering their time and energy to help with invasive plant removal and tree planting. Various tree species will be planted including: cottonwood, shore pine, Douglas fir, vine maple and pacific crab apple.

The official celebration will kick off at 5 p.m. with drumming circles, organic food displays, and sustainable art activities. Everyone is welcome.

Other Earth Day celebrations in the City are offered by the Hamilton and East Richmond Community Associations on Saturday, April 16, and by the Thompson Community Association on Wednesday, April 20. Please pre-register for these events.

Keeping sustainable living in mind, residents are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to all activities. All celebrations will take place rain or shine. For more information or registration of Earth Day events, please contact the City of Richmond.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites… includes pancake machines

by Laurel Miller (RSS feed)

Move over, Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity. There’s a new hotcake in town. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), parent company of the Holiday Inn family of brands, have unveiled pancakes as the secret weapon for the newly revamped Holiday Inn Express hotels.

All of the business traveler-oriented Express properties will introduce a 24-hour market center with grab-and-go options, and an industry-first: a pancake machine, by March 31, 2011. Thirty test hotels already offer the machine, which uses commercial bags of pre-made mix (just add water!). Dollops of batter drop onto a Teflon-coated cooking belt, yielding a perfectly cooked, great-tasting product, every time. The machines produce one pancake every 45 seconds, ensuring even the hungriest executives will get their fill.

IHG is nearing completion on its three-year Holiday Inn brand relaunch campaign. One of the biggest changes has been the implementation of the “social hub” concept, which, according to HotelNewsNow.com, takes “what has traditionally been separate parts of the lobby–the bar, the food and beverage area, [and] the lounge area–and bring[s] them together in one space.” The thinking is that such enforced coziness will provide an “environment to relax, eat, have fun, work, spend time with family, friends or colleagues,” says Verchele Wiggins, VP of global brand management for Holiday Inn.
