Earth Day – particip-action

Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event in the world. More than 6 million Canadians are expected to again join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every student in Canada will take part in an Earth Day activity and we’re going to follow their lead.

Environmental challenges continue to grow as our daily actions pollute and degrade the fragile environment that we all depend on. This is why the Earth Day movement is so important in evoking grassroots change and reducing our carbon footprint.

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond has prepared a list of things you can do to get involved in Earth Day tomorrow:

Smart Shopping

  • “Buy what you need, not what you want”
  • Consider renting and borrowing things that are seldom needed
  • Buy used items from garage sales and second-hand stores

Simple Savers

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Use aerators on faucets and shower heads
  • Weatherstrip windows and doors

Transportation Alternatives

  • Walk, cycle, car pool and use public transportation
  • When driving, reduce idling and maintain correct tire pressure
  • Consider car sharing programs or renting

Food Choices

  • Choose local and organic foods that are in season, and support local food producers
  • Eat less meat

Washing and Drying

  • Wash full loads of clothes in cold water and hang to air dry

Heating and cooling

  • For summer air conditioning, set your thermostat to 24°C or 25°C
  • For winter heating, set your thermostat to 19°C or 20°C
  • Install ceiling fans and programmable thermostats

Bathroom Basics

  • Take short showers instead of baths
  • Close water taps while brushing your teeth

Careful Cleaning

  • Choose natural, non-toxic cleaning products
  • Make simple, natural cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and water

Don’t Discard

  • Donate, reuse and recycle items before throwing them into the trash
  • Harmful materials like chemicals, batteries, electronics, etc. should be taken to local hazardous waste depots or recyclers

Richmond Earth Day Celebrations Emphasize Sustainable Living

Earth Day approaches its 41st anniversary on April 22. This year, over one billion people around the world are expected to participate, truly embodying the theme, A Billion Acts of Green®. The City of Richmond will be officially celebrating Earth Day on Thursday, April 21 at the Garden City Community Park (corner of Alberta Road and Garden City Road).

“In this day and age, it is important that every individual does their part to ensure the continued health and sustainability of our environment for generations to come,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “On Earth Day, we will be teaching community members, especially our youth, how they can contribute to making our planet a greener place to live.”

The event will commence at 1 p.m. with a number of community groups and neighbourhood schools volunteering their time and energy to help with invasive plant removal and tree planting. Various tree species will be planted including: cottonwood, shore pine, Douglas fir, vine maple and pacific crab apple.

The official celebration will kick off at 5 p.m. with drumming circles, organic food displays, and sustainable art activities. Everyone is welcome.

Other Earth Day celebrations in the City are offered by the Hamilton and East Richmond Community Associations on Saturday, April 16, and by the Thompson Community Association on Wednesday, April 20. Please pre-register for these events.

Keeping sustainable living in mind, residents are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to all activities. All celebrations will take place rain or shine. For more information or registration of Earth Day events, please contact the City of Richmond.
