Tall Ships

Special Events  Tall Ships   June 3 to 7, 2011

Richmond is a Port of Call for the World’s Classic Tall Ships

 Maritime Heritage
A century ago, the biggest and fastest sailing ships from all over the world came to Steveston’s bustling Cannery Row in Richmond to load much desired cargos of Pacific salmon for international markets. Today, Richmond’s Steveston Harbour remains Western Canada’s largest commercial fishing port. It is also home to several significant maritime heritage sites, including two national historic sites, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, and the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Park.

The City of Richmond celebrates its maritime heritage, through a number of special events, including visits by some of the world’s great tall ships, festivals and maritime heritage restoration and preservation projects and programs.

Tall Ships Richmond 2011
TallShip_Colour150Experience the majesty of the sails as the tall ships return to Richmond from June 3 to 7, 2011.

Along a three kilometre riverfront of the historic Steveston Harbour, this four-day land and sea festival will celebrate Richmond’s rich maritime history and multiculturally-diverse community.

Highlights of event include:

  • triumphant parade of sails as the mighty ships arrive
  • ship boarding and viewing
  • waterside tours
  • live music and entertainment
  • artisans and farmers markets
  • fireworks
  • cultural displays and activities
  • youth sail training

Tall Ships Festival 2002
Crowd Gathering at the Tall Ships FestivalIn 2002, the Tall Ships from around the world returned to historic Steveston for Richmond Tall Ships 2002, a five-day celebration of maritime history and culture. An estimated 400,000 people turned out to greet a majestic fleet of Tall Ships from Europe, Asia and the Americas visiting Richmond from August 8 to 12, 2002. The Tall Ships were the centrepiece of a major, maritime-themed festival featuring fun and affordable activities for the entire family.

The City’s success in staging the festival was recognized through a number of awards including the Port of the Year Award from the American Sail Training Association, Tourism BC’s 2003 award for Best Tourism Marketing Campaign and the 2002 Gateway Award from Tourism Richmond.

Kaiwo Maru Visits Richmond in 2004
The tall ships returned to the shores of Richmond again in the summer of 2004 . Japans Kaiwo Maru, translated as the King of the Ocean, one of the world’s largest tall ships at a length of 110.9 metres (361-feet), made a four-day visit to Richmond in July, 2004. The Kaiwa Maru’s visit thrilled enthusiastic crowds who lined up for free public tours and an awe-inspiring demonstration of the crew’s sail rigging skills.

SV Concordia Visits Britannia Shipyard
July and August, 2004 also featured a visit to Richmond by the SV Concordia, a well-loved tall ship, that spends 10 months of the year sailing the seven seas, while offering sail training to high school students. The 57-metre (188-foot) Concordia spent three weeks based at Richmond’s Britannia Heritage Shipyard. Hundreds of youths and other sailing fans were able to take part in hand-on day sails, for a once in a lifetime experience of helping to sail a magnificent tall ship.

New Apple Store in Richmond, Microsoft look out

Hundreds lined up Saturday at Richmond Centre mall to be among the first inside B.C.’s newest Apple store.

The lineup of those hungry for iPads and iPhones

iPhone 4 changes everything

stretched outside along the sidewalk of the mall. First in line were Michael Chira and dad Vasile Chira after spending the night outside Richmond Centre to secure their spot.

The Chiras had an eye on the store’s fresh stock of iPhone 4 smart phones.

In keeping with the store’s custom the first 1,000 customers through the doors received a limited-edition Apple T-shirt. It’s B.C.’s third Apple store, and first outside Vancouver.

“We’re really happy to have them here at Richmond Centre,” said mall spokesperson Leslie Matheson.

The new location, one of 17 in Canada and more than 300 worldwide, features the standard Apple repertoire of electronics products like computers, iPods and iPhones. It also boasts a Genius Bar, at which Mac users can set an appointment to get expert advice on their computing issues.

The store opened in a renovated space in Richmond Centre, which is in the process of negotiating with other large retailers. Meanwhile, Sephora will open at the end of October and Forever 21 is expected to open after Christmas.

Earth Day – particip-action

Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event in the world. More than 6 million Canadians are expected to again join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every student in Canada will take part in an Earth Day activity and we’re going to follow their lead.

Environmental challenges continue to grow as our daily actions pollute and degrade the fragile environment that we all depend on. This is why the Earth Day movement is so important in evoking grassroots change and reducing our carbon footprint.

The team at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Riverport-Richmond has prepared a list of things you can do to get involved in Earth Day tomorrow:

Smart Shopping

  • “Buy what you need, not what you want”
  • Consider renting and borrowing things that are seldom needed
  • Buy used items from garage sales and second-hand stores

Simple Savers

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Use aerators on faucets and shower heads
  • Weatherstrip windows and doors

Transportation Alternatives

  • Walk, cycle, car pool and use public transportation
  • When driving, reduce idling and maintain correct tire pressure
  • Consider car sharing programs or renting

Food Choices

  • Choose local and organic foods that are in season, and support local food producers
  • Eat less meat

Washing and Drying

  • Wash full loads of clothes in cold water and hang to air dry

Heating and cooling

  • For summer air conditioning, set your thermostat to 24°C or 25°C
  • For winter heating, set your thermostat to 19°C or 20°C
  • Install ceiling fans and programmable thermostats

Bathroom Basics

  • Take short showers instead of baths
  • Close water taps while brushing your teeth

Careful Cleaning

  • Choose natural, non-toxic cleaning products
  • Make simple, natural cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and water

Don’t Discard

  • Donate, reuse and recycle items before throwing them into the trash
  • Harmful materials like chemicals, batteries, electronics, etc. should be taken to local hazardous waste depots or recyclers

Now from the City of Richmond:

Richmond Earth Day Celebrations Emphasize Sustainable Living

Earth Day approaches its 41st anniversary on April 22. This year, over one billion people around the world are expected to participate, truly embodying the theme, A Billion Acts of Green®. The City of Richmond will be officially celebrating Earth Day on Thursday, April 21 at the Garden City Community Park (corner of Alberta Road and Garden City Road).

“In this day and age, it is important that every individual does their part to ensure the continued health and sustainability of our environment for generations to come,” explains Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “On Earth Day, we will be teaching community members, especially our youth, how they can contribute to making our planet a greener place to live.”

The event will commence at 1 p.m. with a number of community groups and neighbourhood schools volunteering their time and energy to help with invasive plant removal and tree planting. Various tree species will be planted including: cottonwood, shore pine, Douglas fir, vine maple and pacific crab apple.

The official celebration will kick off at 5 p.m. with drumming circles, organic food displays, and sustainable art activities. Everyone is welcome.

Other Earth Day celebrations in the City are offered by the Hamilton and East Richmond Community Associations on Saturday, April 16, and by the Thompson Community Association on Wednesday, April 20. Please pre-register for these events.

Keeping sustainable living in mind, residents are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to all activities. All celebrations will take place rain or shine. For more information or registration of Earth Day events, please contact the City of Richmond.
